Source Code is the rare sci-fi thriller that is both clever and warm. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon), it takes a time-loop idea and turns it into a race against the clock, and into something surprisingly emotional.
The Plot
Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal), a US Army helicopter pilot, wakes up on a commuter train heading into Chicago. A woman across from him, Christina (Michelle Monaghan), talks to him as if they’re friends. When he looks in the mirror, the face he sees isn’t his own. Eight minutes later, the train explodes.
Colter wakes up again, this time strapped inside a dark capsule. Through a screen, officer Colleen Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) explains: he is part of a secret program called Source Code. It lets him relive the last eight minutes of a man who died in the train bombing that morning. His mission is to find the bomber, because a much bigger attack on the city is coming.
So Colter goes back. Again. And again.
Groundhog Day Meets Hitchcock
The loop structure is a lot of fun. Each eight-minute run adds a new clue, and the film never gets repetitive because Colter changes his approach every time. Jake Gyllenhaal is very good as a man who is confused, frustrated and slowly realizing that his situation is stranger than anyone tells him.
The Real Question
Source Code is less about who the bomber is, and more about Colter himself. Why can’t he remember how he got into the capsule? Why won’t his commanders answer simple questions? The best mystery in the film is hiding in plain sight.
Verdict
Fast, smart and only 93 minutes long. A great pick for anyone who loves time loops and a twist with real feeling.

- Good to know: Scott Bakula, star of the TV series Quantum Leap, has a voice cameo as Colter’s father.
Source Code Ending Explained

Colter learns the hard truth about himself.
The twist: Colter Stevens is already dead. He was killed in Afghanistan two months earlier. What’s left is part of his brain, kept alive on life support and connected to the Source Code program. The capsule is only a mental image his mind creates.
Colter eventually identifies the bomber, Derek Frost, a disturbed young man who wants to destroy Chicago with a dirty bomb. With this information, the real attack is stopped. The program is a success, and Dr. Rutledge plans to wipe Colter’s memory and use him again.
Colter asks Goodwin for one last trip into the Source Code, and then to let him die. She agrees. In his final eight minutes, he defuses the bomb, stops Frost, calls his father and kisses Christina. At the exact moment the eight minutes end, Goodwin switches off his life support, and the scene freezes.
But time keeps going. The Source Code didn’t just create a simulation, it created a real alternate reality. In this new world, Colter lives on in the body of Sean Fentress, the man whose memories he borrowed, with Christina by his side. He sends an email to this world’s Goodwin, telling her the program works better than she knows.

Is Colter dead in Source Code?
In the main reality, yes. He died in Afghanistan and only part of his brain is kept alive. In the alternate reality created at the end, he lives on in Sean Fentress’s body.
What happens to Sean Fentress at the end of Source Code?
The film doesn’t answer it directly. In the new reality, Colter’s consciousness has taken over Sean’s body, which suggests Sean’s own mind is gone. It’s one of the most debated questions about the ending.
Is Source Code a time travel movie?
Not exactly. Colter doesn’t travel back in time. He enters a parallel reality built from a dead man’s last memories, and each run creates a new branch of reality.
